Monster /// Life – Death – Familiar: Toni Kiss transforms the Sigismund Chapel into a surreal landscape of souls
In the Sigismund Chapel at the Thon-Dittmer Palace, from September 23 to October 17, 2026, previous and new works by the artist Toni Kiss will come together. The exhibition connects fabric objects, installations, collages, and paintings into a space-encompassing art experience between life, death, memory, and grotesque humor.
Between Beauty, Horror, and Irony
Toni Kiss develops a pictorial world in which the uncanny and the seductive lie closely together. Monsters, seedlings, landscapes of souls, and therapeutic gags appear as fantastic figures of a surreal present. Sarcastic humor meets organic forms, delicate materiality meets brittle surfaces, and sensual attraction clashes with deliberately placed disgust.
Materials as Living Image Bodies
The exhibition expands the classical concept of painting to include textile objects, collages, and installations. Through gluing, drawing, painting, sewing, and knotting, works emerge whose materiality becomes immediately tangible. Objects and accumulations enclosed behind plastic layers appear like growing organic systems that spread in the space and develop their own visual logic.
Memory as Artistic Construction
In the curation, recurring motifs, images, and impressions enter into dialogue with each other. The works reflect each other and create an exhibition atmosphere in which the past does not appear static, but overlaps, condenses, and reconfigures. Knots become artistic punctuation marks: They bundle thoughts, mark transitions, and simultaneously set a conclusion.
Art Historical Context and Aesthetic Experience
The works can be categorized within a contemporary surrealism that does not depict societal reality, but distorts and makes it physically palpable. Toni Kiss combines art educational sensitivity with an experimental practice where organic and inorganic forms meet. The viewing of the works opens up an aesthetic experience between fascination, irritation, and dark humor.
Visit and Vernissage
The vernissage takes place on September 26, 2026, as part of the Regensburg Gallery Evening. The artist will be present. The exhibition is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. On October 2, extended opening hours will apply until 10:00 PM. Admission is free, and registration is not required.
Conclusion: An Art Experience between Life and Death
Monster /// Life – Death – Familiar invites you into a color-intensive, contradictory, and physically engaging world. Visitors can expect an exhibition that allows materials to speak, puts memories in motion, and explores the boundaries between beauty and horror. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary installation, surrealistic imagery, and cultural education as an open viewing should definitely meet Toni Kiss live in the Sigismund Chapel.
