Wilhelm Busch's Picture Stories Between Word, Image, and Music
On Friday, October 9, 2026, the AKUSO Forum in Regensburg will be transformed into an atmospheric place for literary humor, pointed verses, and musical sound colors. The musical reading Picture Stories by Wilhelm Busch combines Busch's unmistakable linguistic artistry with specially designed musical accompaniment.
Satire with Sharp Insight and Rhythmic Wit
Wilhelm Busch is one of the most influential humorous poets and illustrators in German cultural history. His picture stories combine concise rhymes, expressive illustrations, and precise observations of human weaknesses. Beneath the seemingly light tone lies social satire, moral ambiguity, and a keen sense of the comedy of everyday life.
Works such as Max and Moritz, Fipps, the Monkey, or The Virtuoso demonstrate how closely text and image are intertwined in Busch's work. The event highlights this narrative double talent in a lively reading format and makes it palpable how strongly his linguistic rhythms are shaped by musical dynamics.
A Reading as a Musical Experience
The musical arrangement is provided by the trio Drei Cappuccini: Karin Schober will handle the spoken part, Angela Kreuz plays the cello, and Claudia Möbus accompanies the reading on the piano. This creates an interplay of voice, string sound, and keys that transforms Busch's pointed verses into an immediate stage presence.
The atmosphere of the reading thrives on the interplay between comedic intensification, linguistic precision, and musical resonance. The audience encounters Wilhelm Busch not only as an author of picture stories but as an artist whose linguistic artistry extends into rhythm, pauses, and sound.
Classic Literature with Modern Impact
Busch's work is regarded as an important precursor to modern comics. His combination of sequential imagery, short texts, and pointed dramaturgy continues to influence today's graphic novels and illustration art. At the same time, the musical reading opens a cultural access that connects literature, graphic art, and concert atmosphere.
The event is held in favor of the Cat Assistance Regenstauf. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. Thus, the evening uniquely combines literary experience with cultural engagement.
