King Roger: Between Order, Ecstasy and Self-Discovery
Karol Szymanowski's opera King Roger unfolds on October 13, 2026, at the Theater am Bismarckplatz as a multifaceted music theater about power, religion, sensuality, and the search for one's self. The Regensburg premiere combines a colorful score with choral force, dance, and a visually striking production by Sebastian Ritschel.
A Kingdom is Thrown Off Balance
King Roger stands between state interests and personal longings. A charismatic shepherd preaches a Dionysian cult and challenges the existing order. While Queen Roxana is attracted to this new freedom, Roger struggles with the limits of his identity. The dramaturgy leads the audience through an inner and outer conflict where religious certainty, political power, and erotic temptation clash.
Szymanowski's Musical Mystery
The opera, created between 1918 and 1924, draws from various intellectual sources: Euripides’ The Bacchae, Plato's dialogues, Nietzsche, as well as Szymanowski's own travel experiences. Impressionistic colors, intense solo parts, and powerful choral scenes merge into a musical mystery about altered states of consciousness and new forms of spirituality.
Direction, Set Design, and Dance as One
Sebastian Ritschel's production places human longing at the center. Kristopher Kempf is responsible for set and costumes, while Wanja Ostrower creates the lighting atmosphere. The dance company Theater Regensburg adds a physically immediate experiential layer to the opera's narrative. Volker Michl's choreography, the Philharmonic Orchestra Regensburg, and the powerful work of the opera chorus condense the evening into an atmospheric stage experience.
An Evening with Introduction and Post-Discussion
Before the start of the performance, the theater invites for an introduction at 7 PM. Following the performance, there will be a post-discussion. The opera is presented in Polish with German subtitles and is recommended for audience members aged 14 and up. The performance lasts about 85 minutes.
Conclusion: Opera as a Boundary Experience
King Roger promises an intense music theater evening between late Romantic sound language, philosophical drama, and expressive movement art. Those who want to experience opera as a sensual, modern, and intellectually stimulating stage experience will find an impressive encounter with a rarely performed key work of the 20th century at the Theater am Bismarckplatz.
