Monsta: On Monster Research at the Young Theatre Regensburg

When it rustles under the bed and mysterious scratch marks appear, a imaginative expedition begins at the Young Theatre Regensburg: Monsta combines puppetry, puppet play, and storytelling into a 45-minute concert experience for children aged four and up – entirely without a concert, but with lots of stage energy, eerie sounds, and plenty of courage.

Chilling with Humor and Imagination

A monster under the bed has a tough time today. It can rattle, bare its teeth, clatter, make doors squeak, and hang upside down from the ceiling – many children remain unafraid all the same. In the production, two monsterologists search for the last specimens of their endangered species and take the audience on a playful research journey.

Puppet Play Meets Shadow Play

Masks, puppets, monster gymnastics, fright experiments, and scream tutorials bring movement to the stage. The direction by Benedikt Grubel works with precise synchronization, transformable stage designs, and an expressive sound design. Light, shadow, and body-focused playing transform the Young Theatre into a laboratory for spooky feelings.

A Play about Fear and Courage

At the center is the question of when a monster really appears dangerous – and when it primarily arises in one's own imagination. Monsta offers children a humorous approach to fear, curiosity, and self-confidence. The play development is based on the eponymous children's book by Dita Zipfel, who was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 2020.

Regensburg Premiere with Short Duration

The family-friendly performance lasts about 45 minutes and takes place without an intermission. The format is particularly suitable for children aged four and older and for families who are seeking an intense yet accessible introduction to the world of puppetry. Post-show discussions are generally possible and can be requested at the theatre.
