3rd Division: Promotion and missed finale
Cottbus promoted – Jahn Regensburg misses out on season finale
Energie Cottbus secured promotion with a 1:0 (1:0) win at SSV Jahn Regensburg. Although Jahn improved after a weak first half, they failed to take their biggest chance in stoppage time.
FC Energie Cottbus won 1:0 in Regensburg on Saturday. The decisive goal was scored by Giannis Boziaris in the 28th minute with a shot from about 20 meters into the top right corner. With this victory, Cottbus is promoted to the second division. Regensburg finished the season in twelfth place after the home defeat – and still had a chance to equalize in the final phase, when Florian Dietz missed a penalty.
Cottbus controls the first half and scores spectacularly
Cottbus dominated the match from the start, played more maturely in build-up, and put Regensburg under early pressure. In the 20th minute, they were close to taking the lead: Axel Borgmann hit the crossbar with a volley after a corner. Shortly after, another chance went begging when Moritz Hannemann's finish was too weak.
The visitors finally rewarded themselves: Boziaris scored precisely into the top right corner from distance in the 28th minute – a goal that fit this phase, as Energie had the clearer structure and greater determination.
Regensburg responds after the break, but the equalizer doesn't come
After the break, Regensburg appeared more active. In the 47th minute, the hosts already celebrated the supposed equalizer, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Jahn now played more directly, won more second balls, and pushed the game towards the Cottbus penalty area.
Cottbus focused more on defending during this phase and managed the lead without completely losing control. Regensburg did gain more presence, but for long stretches did not create consistently clear chances – the decisive period of pressure only developed right at the end.
In stoppage time, Awortwie-Grant cleared off the line against Noel Eichinger. Shortly after, Regensburg was awarded a penalty after a foul on John Posselt. Florian Dietz stepped up, shot half-high down the middle – Funk saved with his legs. The equalizer did not come.
Promotion is secured, Jahn left with an open season record
The win had immediate consequences for Cottbus: promotion was secured. After the final whistle, Cottbus fans stormed the pitch, and pyrotechnics were already visible from the away section during the match.
For Regensburg, twelfth place is a sobering end to a season with noticeable ups and downs. The club had been relegated from the second division a year ago – so the pressure was high to regain stability both on the field and financially. Especially in a league that many officials describe as a "loss-making business," every missed step upwards becomes a test of endurance: those chasing a deficit for a long time need not only possession phases but also results.
The fact that Jahn got their best chance only in stoppage time and failed to take it summed up this game: inferior for a long time, then improved, but ultimately without a result. Managing director Philipp Hausner still sees the club better positioned for the coming season – but the main image at the end remained: Cottbus was clearer and more efficient in the decisive moments, Regensburg missed their last chance.
