3rd League before the season finale
Jahn Regensburg faces tough home match against promotion contender Cottbus
SSV Jahn Regensburg goes into the final matchday of the 2025/2026 3rd league season with inconsistent form. On Saturday, May 16 (1:30 p.m.), second-placed FC Energie Cottbus will come to the Upper Palatinate – an opponent for whom there is still a lot at stake in the season finale.
Before the 38th round, Regensburg has played 37 matches, collected 49 points, and is in twelfth place. The situation is therefore clearly outlined: Jahn hosts a top team, while their own season record points more to the midfield.
Regensburg between upward outliers and setbacks
The past weeks show why Regensburg is hard to pin down. In the last five league games, there have been two wins, one draw, and two losses. Most recently, Jahn lost 0:1 at SV Waldhof Mannheim on May 9. Before that, Regensburg won 2:1 at home against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim II and made a statement with a 5:2 at Hansa Rostock. In contrast, there was a 1:3 at home against Alemannia Aachen and a 2:2 at TSV 1860 Munich.
For the assessment before the duel with Cottbus, this means: Regensburg has demonstrably the quality to win games clearly even away – at the same time, the stability is lacking to reliably score points over several matchdays. Against an opponent from the top group, this very fluctuation can become the decisive factor.
Cottbus travels as second in the table
Cottbus comes with a significantly stronger season record. After 37 games, Energie is in second place with 69 points. The record: 20 wins, 9 draws, 8 losses, plus 71:51 goals and a goal difference of plus 20. Regensburg has 14 wins, 7 draws and 16 losses as well as 54:57 goals (goal difference −3).
In a league where placements are determined not only by points but, in close situations, also by goal difference, these numbers underline the roles before kickoff: Cottbus appears more mature and effective over the course of the season, while Regensburg is more susceptible to match developments in which conceding goals can tip the balance of the game.
The season record of Jahn before the conclusion
Despite the mid-table position, Jahn had notable highlights this season. The biggest home win was 4:0 against TSV 1860 Munich, the most significant away win was 5:2 at Hansa Rostock. Among the highest-scoring Regensburg games are also the 5:2 against TSV Havelse and the 3:4 at Erzgebirge Aue.
These results in particular provide an indication of the sporting character of the season: Regensburg can keep games open and create offensive impact, but at the same time, in matches with many penalty area scenes, is not always able to secure a result. Against Cottbus, it will therefore be crucial whether Jahn can control the game for longer phases – or whether an open exchange develops in which the second-placed team can exploit its efficiency.
For Regensburg, the season finale is thus a home game with a high hurdle: the table position, season data, and recent form all point to a challenging task against an opponent who arrives as second with significantly better statistics.
