A literary quest for Czernowitz

Susanne Hanus presents her three-generation project Journey to Czernowitz at the East German Gallery Art Forum. The reading connects personal memory, historical research, and artistic imagery into a poignant author encounter about origins, flight, and the fragile continuity of European cultural history.

Memory as a journey through generations

The focus is on the story of Ernestine Hanus, who had to leave her home Czernowitz in 1940. Together with her father and grandmother, Susanne Hanus traveled back in 2008 to the places where the family history took place. From diary entries, images, drawings, and observations, a multifaceted collage emerged between literary travelogue, family chronicle, and artistic documentation.

Czernowitz as a lost cultural center

The event leads into a city whose cultural identity was shaped by Yiddish, German, Ukrainian, Romanian, and Polish languages. Hanus directs attention to the end of this diverse cultural life, on resettlement, war, and displacement. Supplementary reports from Ukraine after the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion in 2022 draw a direct connection between historical experience and the present.

Reading, imagery, and scientific dialogue

The reading unfolds its effect in the interplay of voice, text, and visual art. An installation of red threads in the foyer of the museum forms the meaningful framework: It refers to family connections, historical entanglements, and the relationships between places and times. The evening is moderated by Prof. Katrin Boeckh from the Think Tank Ukraine, the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

This creates a literary experience at the intersection of memory culture, contemporary art, and Ukraine expertise. The narrative structure of the project makes private life paths readable as part of a larger European history and simultaneously opens space for cultural discourse.

Conclusion: An evening for memory and present

Visitors can expect a concentrated reading with images, historical context, and personal perspective. Journey to Czernowitz invites to understand family history not as a completed past, but as a living trace in the present. Participation is free, registration is required.
